Attack coordination

We have been building towards a layered attack for the last 2 years at u16/u18. By combining the different attack methodologies, we now play a style of rugby that will be very difficult for the opposition to read. At first, this may look complicated, but very quickly you will see its strength is its simplicity. By using the BPP we can ensure players have the required skill set to pull this off.

5 Attack zones

Five zones we will plan to attack, without kicking the ball

1-3-3-1

  1. Two pods with 3 players
  2. Float sits behind the POD and has a number of roles
    1. first is to monitor the ruck, if required join the ruck and secure the ball
    2. two give the 9 options on attack
      1. either attack blind or be a Mayhem option
    3. Follow the ball to the next ruck
  3. Strike
    1. Gives the running pod an outside attack optios
    2. Let the pod know where the holes are to attack

3 attack plans

  • A.Piston
  • B.Pin (In & Out)
  • C.Mayhem

PLAN A: Piston

Why

  • Rugby is about dominating the collisions
  • Do we have a pack capable of that?

How

  • We run through and turn the defense
  • We look for offloads, tips, short passes
  • We win the ruck
  • Setup the next pod in piston format
  • This sucks in the backs
  • Then we release to the wing

Drills

  • Continuous ruck
  • Flag passing drill
  • Peripheral passing drills
  • Offload drill

PLAN B: Pin Inside

Why

  • We want to vary our play to confuse the defense
  • We want to run into gaps
  • We want to use our backs

How

  • Pod leader spins and passes to 10
  • 10 at full speed gets away from the forward
  • Backs attack the line with block runners

Drills

  • Quick pass
  • Block pattern
  • Under and Overs

PLAN B: Pin Outside

Why

  • We want to vary our play
  • We want to get outside the 13-channel
  • We want our wing in a 1 on 1

How

  • The pod leader spins and passes to 10
  • 10 moves the ball wide
  • Backs attack wide and draw in defenders

Drills

  • Long passes

PLAN C: Mayhem

  • Work through phases, relentlessly attack the fringes of the ruck with speed and intensity
    • Pick and goes
    • underlines from 9
    • Dynamic runners on the cut
  • Overwhelm the opposition, get front-ball momentum
  • Designed to stop the rush defence

PLAN C: Mayhem

Blind

  • Attack hard and Fast
  • Take someone with you
  • Keep the defense on the blind honest
  • Fullback keep an eye on the blind and communicate

9 to 10

Why

  • Attack as there is space
  • 9 to 10 is not planned, by driven by opportunity

How

  • Communicate
  • 13 Communicates to 10
  • 10 communicate to 9
  • Big accurate passes
  • in front to run onto the ball at speed
