Impact Tackle Theory
- Preparation
- Get stable
- Stay on your toes so you can quickly change direction
- Keep your hips straight
- Make impact
- Place your leg between the defenders’ legs
- Aim for the belly button with your shoulder
- Above the knees
- Below the chest
- Head to the side
- look up to see what coming
- but keep head stable and strong
- Nose to crack
- Complete the tackle
- Arms behind the knees and squeeze
- Power legs through
- Land on top
- Roll when support arrives
Drills
Open field tackle
- Open-field tackle is more challenging as player momentum, speed and agility come into play.
- It's essential to try and keep square on, if you turn your hips a good attacker will switch direction on you.
- Never giraffe tackle (feet planted on the ground and reaching out)
- If someone beats you on the outside, dive and wrap your arms around their shorts and pull them down
